Picnic tables

Chesney

1823 SW Clay, Topeka

Located three blocks west of the Kansas Expocentre between 18th and 19th streets, this park is ready for activity with a small skateboard park and a basketball court. Youngsters will enjoy a variety of playground equipment, including swings and teeter-totters. There are plenty of picnic tables -- some beneath an open-air shelter -- plus a BBQ grill, a water fountain and a gazebo. Large, mature trees offer lots of shade.

Brookfield

2430 SW Kingsrow Road, Topeka

This newer neighborhood park located a few blocks east of Cypress Ridge Golf Course is deceptively versatile. There's modern playground equipment (on a rubberized surface) for the youngsters and a tennis/basketball court for more mature athletes. An open-air shelter covers three picnic tables and a walking path winds around the park for those wanting exercise for themselves or the dog or both. Plus there's a water fountain.

Boswell Square

SW 14th and SW Boswell, Topeka

This park preserves the city block occupied by Boswell Junior High from 1922 to 1980. A nicely landscaped brick walk features the names of several former Boswell students and leads to the Boswell Neighborhood Wall of Fame, where the building's 1922 date stone is displayed. A gazebo, modern playground equipment, basketball courts and shaded benches highlight the park's amenities, while a large open field with a backstop is perfect for ball games.

Big Shunga

SW Murrow Ct. and SW Shunga , Topeka

Big Shunga is exactly what the name indicates: BIG. You might enter the 95-acre park at Washburn and Shunga Drive, but you could also spot it again off 29th Street. Big Shunga is part of the park system that ties into the Shunga Trail. Near the concrete trail, the park is shady and tree-lined. Memorial benches provide a place to stop, catch your breath during a run or bike ride, and listen to birds tweet from the nearby trees. Rehydrate at a fountain. At Shunga and High a playground area features play equipment and a merry-go-round.

Austin

2300 SE Jefferson, Topeka

Where Jefferson Street dead-ends at Austin Park you'll find a sunny spot for sports and play plopped in the middle of a neighborhood. There's a softball diamond, basketball court and tennis court. There's also plenty of playground equipment and swings. Rehydrate at the drinking fountain or relax at a picnic table under the red open-air shelter house.

Auburndale

2400 NW Perry, Topeka

Just before it reaches the Kansas River, Ward-Martin Creek slices through this wide-open park along Interstate 70 and NW Waite. The creek provides a fishing destination for city dwellers and, in recent years, has been stocked with trout in early spring. Ball games of all kinds can be played at the park -- the softball backstop is still there -- but the latest game is cricket, played by the Kansas Cricket Club. A picnic table and some playground equipment are located near the parking lot.

Adams

3300 SE Adams, Topeka

This small neighborhood park between Adams and Massachusetts features lots of green space and bright playground equipment. It has slides that are just the right size for young children and playground equipment that older kids will love, too.
