Cushinberry

Named after the late Grant Cushinberry, a local philanthropist, this wedge-shaped park separates 15th and 17th streets as they converge eastward from Quincy. The park is heavily shaded by mature trees and welcomes visitors with numerous picnic tables, benches, a BBQ grill and a water fountain. Youngsters can try out the playground equipment, including swings and a merry-go-round, or check out the concrete Bison sculpture at the east end. Both the Landon and Shunga trails can be picked up near Cushinberry Park.

600 SW MacVicar, Topeka

This small but shady park at SW 6th and MacVicar is bisected by Ward-Martin Creek, with most of its amenities on the east side of the creek by the small parking lot. The playground equipment includes a small slippery slide, teeter-totters, regular swings, a tire swing and a jungle gym -- plus a basketball court. There are picnic tables and a BBQ grill for picnickers.



Chesney

1823 SW Clay, Topeka

Located three blocks west of the Kansas Expocentre between 18th and 19th streets, this park is ready for activity with a small skateboard park and a basketball court. Youngsters will enjoy a variety of playground equipment, including swings and teeter-totters. There are plenty of picnic tables -- some beneath an open-air shelter -- plus a BBQ grill, a water fountain and a gazebo. Large, mature trees offer lots of shade.



Big Shunga

SW Murrow Ct. and SW Shunga , Topeka

Big Shunga is exactly what the name indicates: BIG. You might enter the 95-acre park at Washburn and Shunga Drive, but you could also spot it again off 29th Street. Big Shunga is part of the park system that ties into the Shunga Trail. Near the concrete trail, the park is shady and tree-lined. Memorial benches provide a place to stop, catch your breath during a run or bike ride, and listen to birds tweet from the nearby trees. Rehydrate at a fountain. At Shunga and High a playground area features play equipment and a merry-go-round.



Austin

2300 SE Jefferson, Topeka

Where Jefferson Street dead-ends at Austin Park you'll find a sunny spot for sports and play plopped in the middle of a neighborhood. There's a softball diamond, basketball court and tennis court. There's also plenty of playground equipment and swings. Rehydrate at the drinking fountain or relax at a picnic table under the red open-air shelter house.



Adams

3300 SE Adams, Topeka

This small neighborhood park between Adams and Massachusetts features lots of green space and bright playground equipment. It has slides that are just the right size for young children and playground equipment that older kids will love, too.
