Long-time Topekans and former students who remember the storm-ravaged campus of Washburn University after the 1966 tornado will be amazed by the school's impressive new facilities and beautifully landscaped grounds. Located in the heart of Topeka, this 160-acre campus offers walkers and joggers a two-mile trek around its perimeter (SW 17th to SW 21st & SW Washburn to SW MacVicar). But only a stroll through the campus will reveal its true beauty, as dazzling garden beds, abundant trees and sculptures await those who probe the interior.

Art buffs can visit the Mulvane Art Museum, which features almost 3,000 objects in its permanent collection, a schedule of changing exhibitions and numerous public programs (admission is free), while the school's White Concert Hall is the home of the Topeka Symphony Orchestra http://www.topekasymphony.org/ . If it's action you seek, visitors can view baseball, softball, soccer and tennis events on the south side of the campus throughout the school year, or take in basketball and volleyball games in Lee Arena or a football game at Yager Stadium.

New housing and learning facilities have turned this once-sleepy municipal college into a vibrant-but-still-comfortably-sized university with around 6,500 students. According to its Web site at http://www.washburn.edu/main/index.html, Washburn offers more than 200 programs leading to certification, associate, bachelor, master's and juris doctor degrees through the College of Arts and Sciences and the schools of Applied Studies, Business, Law and Nursing.
