Shawnee South sits across the street from Pauline Central School and next to the Montara neighborhood and is well-marked with signs. It is located near Forbes Field and was part of 175 acres aquired by Shawnee County in 1975 that was once used by the United States Air Force at Forbes Field.

The park includes the Velma K. Paris Community Center, which was named for a former county commissioner. The building underwent a major renovation in 2004. The center offers before- and after-school programs, summer youth programs and a preschool. It has a gym and weight room available for a yearly fee of $50. Special events, such as a daddy-daughter date night, take place throughout the year. The facility also has foosball and pool tables that people are welcome to use when the facility isn't otherwise busy. The center is open 7:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday. However, the center may be opened for other programs, including tumbling classes on Saturdays. The center's staff is always looking for volunteers and others with an interest in running programs. Also, the building can be rented out for special events.

Also at Shawnee South are two lighted ball diamonds used for youth T-ball leagues, adult softball leagues and tournament play. The park has athletic fields for soccer and football, a basketball court and bright orange and blue playground equipment.

Also located on the property is the Kansas Quarter Midget Association, which had the Western Grand Nationals at the site in 2006. Forbes Public Golf Course, a nine-hole course, is located near the community center.
