Lake Shawnee trout stocking postponed

Lake Shawnee trout stocking postponed

February 22, 2013

The stocking of trout at Lake Shawnee has been postponed one week due to Thursday’s snow storm. The fish are transported from Chaulk Mound Trout Ranch in Bridgeport, Neb..

Lake Shawnee will be stocked with 7,000 pounds of Rainbow Trout on Saturday, March 2, at noon. The lake will be closed to fishing until 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, to give the trout time to disperse and acclimate to their new surroundings.

The trout will be released at the main boat ramp. The trout must be a minimum of 11 inches in length and at least 600 will be in excess of four pounds each. Some of the trout will be tagged, so if a tagged trout is caught, the tag should be removed and brought to the SCPR administrative office at 3137 S.E. 29th to redeem a prize.

Shawnee County Parks and Recreation participates in the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Community Fisheries Assistance Program (CFAP). CFAP funds offset the cost of fishing programs at Lake Shawnee including the stocking of the lake with trout in the spring and fall of each year. All KDWPT licensing and permit requirements apply for fishing at Lake Shawnee.
